Sculpture
It's easy to lose oneself in the vivid geometries and alien qualities of the intricate, complex constructivist pieces of Hay's early sculpture. Hay used Shrine for the Absurd as a model for a number of paintings, lithographs, and other works through the late '80s and early '90s. Later pieces reflect on Hay's experience in war such as The General and Veteran Returns Home. The latter expresses both the internal turmoil and outward hostility shown towards veterans returning from the Vietnam War that Hay himself experienced--even though he had been drafted. Hay's later sculpture, often using metal and concrete of his Butterfly and Acrobat designs, explores more archetypal and energetic figurations.
